As the first "Pokémon" main series game on the Nintendo Switch platform, Game Freak seems to want to make some new attempts on "Sword/Shield." Whether their changes to the "Pokémon" foundation are appropriate or not, at least I wholeheartedly agree with replacing the separate expansion pack with a DLC; after all, a DLC is much cheaper than spending another game's money. Since its launch, "Sword/Shield" has been questioned by players. Although it has broken sales records to prove its "acceptable" quality, it is definitely not what old "Pokémon" players want. The announcement of "Isle of Armor" (hereinafter referred to as "Isle") and "Crown Tundra" (hereinafter referred to as "Tundra") has actually lit a spark of hope in the hearts of these players (including me). However, when the first DLC "Isle" was actually launched, players once again found that there is still a whale shark between reality and ideal. I'm not saying that "Isle" is bad, the open-world map, following, and the return of some Pokémon have indeed brought some improvements to "Sword/Shield." However, as the first large DLC of the "Pokémon" series and the completion work of the eighth generation, it is simply not enough. The overly short main story, the unimpressive story, the boring and annoying collection elements, all the problems that "Sword/Shield" has, it inherits them all. On October 23, 2020, "Crown Tundra" was officially released. So, after three months of practicing "Isle," I once again set foot on the continent of Galar. This time, I only hope that Game Freak can draw a not so bad ending for the eighth generation. From the train station in Woodstock, we boarded the train and traveled south on the map, and we were brought to a new stage on the continent of Galar - the Crown Tundra. The story of "Tundra" is based on three legends流传 on this land - the Crown King, the Three Giants, and the Three Divine Birds. Players will embark on an adventure to find legendary Pokémon with these three legends as clues. It sounds like "Tundra" wants to tell a grand adventure story that can match the main body of "Sword/Shield" (??), but in conclusion, "Tundra" also perfectly inherits the biggest problem of the story of "Sword/Shield" - another tailless story. Although the story of "Tundra" is based on ancient legends, it focuses on using light-hearted methods to depict characters, and the so-called adventure that players experience is nothing more than a temporary replacement for a sightseeing tour. Although the story itself is tailless, it is not without its merits. In fact, there are even some things that are worth praising. Although the story of "Tundra" has a clear goal and orientation, it does not force players to follow a certain order of play due to the existence of three legends at the same time, giving players the right to choose the priority target freely. Combined with the same open-world map design as "Isle," "Tundra" indeed brought me a fairly good adventure experience. The map of "Isle" adopted the new open-world design, but its empty narrative and unnecessary background setting ultimately could not support the ecology of the whole island. For players, the reason for going to a certain area to explore may be just "passing by" under the guidance of the game. Compared with "Isle," the story experience of "Tundra" is much better. Perhaps it is because Game Freak finally got a clue about the design of open-world maps, as I said in the previous section, "Tundra" uses a multi-target synchronous approach in the story and distributes it to various corners of the whole map, weakening the single-line linear guidance of the plot. When players feel that they have the right to lead the story, their desire for exploration and adventure is amplified, which is also the main reason why "Tundra" is more interesting to play than "Isle." Although the map design of "Tundra" is still far from those truly open-world games, for the "Pokémon" series, "Tundra" has finally taken a step that it should have taken a long time ago in the balance of story and map design. If we really have to say what the biggest selling point of "Tundra" is, it is of course the full return of legendary Pokémon from all generations, which is what we commonly call the "legendary beast gift package." But before that, I must first introduce a new game mode added in "Tundra" - "Extreme Adventure." "Extreme Adventure" is an extension of the Extreme Gym Battle play in "Sword/Shield." The designers seem to want to use this mode to rekindle the vitality of Extreme Gym Battle. As a result, although it is only temporary, they have indeed done so. The Extreme Gym Battle in "Sword/Shield" has degenerated into a tool mode that lacks feelings and thoughts, only for功利 brush, due to its fixed play style and the card-drawing monster mechanism that is like a face. It has even derived various stable single-player brush methods, making the so-called "group" meaningless. The addition of "Extreme Adventure" makes Extreme Gym Battle truly have some randomness and challenge. The game mode of "Extreme Adventure" is simple to say that it adds some play of combat facilities on the basis of the continuous battle of Extreme Gym Battle. In this mode, players cannot use their own Pokémon for combat, which first ensures that the battle will not be suppressed by level. After entering the big adventure, players can choose the road to advance at the fork, and different attribute Extreme Pokémon are lurking on each road, waiting for the challenge of players; after defeating them, they can choose to capture and replace the Pokémon in hand to carry out the next battle. And what is waiting for players at the deepest part of "Extreme Adventure" is various Extreme Pokémon, which is the core of the "legendary beast gift package" of this work. To fight against legendary Pokémon, players need to carefully choose the road to advance, capture strong Pokémon to supplement their strength, but at the same time, they also need to save their strength for the final stage to avoid sudden collapse. This interbalancing design mechanism is simple, but it actually improves the strategic and interesting nature of the game. In addition, it is especially worth mentioning that the capture rate of legendary Pokémon in "Extreme Adventure" is 100%, which means that players can easily capture a legendary Pokémon that meets their expectations in terms of species and personality by combining the "character capsule" and "personality mint" in "Sword/Shield." Of course, in addition to "Extreme Adventure," "Tundra" also prepares some special legendary Pokémon capture mechanisms. Among them, footprint collection is a unique capture mechanism for the three knights. Footprint collection is somewhat similar to the Z cell collection in past works, and players can encounter the three knights and capture them after collecting 50 of them. But unlike the past, the footprints in "Tundra" are dynamically generated by the system, and the number is far more than 50, so collecting 50 footprints while exploring is not a difficult thing. However, it took me a lot of time to collect a total of 150 footprints for the three knights. Footprint collection proves the possibility of building an open-world Pokémon ecological environment from the side. Under this design concept framework, what makes me feel even more surprised is the capture design of the three divine birds of Galar. In the legend of the three divine birds, players need to go to three open-world maps in Galar - the Wild Area, the Armor Island, and the Crown Tundra to find the three legendary bird Pokémon respectively. The action mode of these three legendary birds is a new "wandering" mode formed by combining the characteristics of the Pokémon "Minglei" of the eighth generation. The "wandering" design of legendary beasts is not a new thing, but the "wandering" of Pokémon series in the past was limited by the "dark lightning" design of the old generation, making the pursuit of legendary things that should be full of romance lack expression and challenge. It was not until I encountered the three divine birds in "Tundra" that I truly felt this unique romance born by the "Pokémon" world. Thanks to the "Minglei" setting of "Sword/Shield," players can see the active Pokémon from a distance, and combined with the characteristics of players' actions and perspectives in open-world maps, chasing legendary Pokémon on bicycles in the game has been realized. Unfortunately, except for the story of the three divine birds, this mechanism has not been used more. At the end of "Tundra," Game Freak also brought a combat mode called "Galar Star Cup." "Galar Star Cup" is a two-player elimination tournament that can be freely teamed up with NPCs. The essence of this mode is the secondary depiction of important characters in the game and the review and summary of "Sword/Shield." Perhaps this is also conveying an important message to players - here, the story of the eighth generation has officially come to an end. Of course, apart from all that, just being able to team up with Mary is enough to satisfy me. Although I have not been sparing in my praise for "Tundra" in this article, it does not mean that the quality of "Tundra" is excellent enough to satisfy all players. Frankly speaking, "Tundra" is still just a play enhancement version of "Sword/Shield," and it is the level that the "Pokémon" series should have played long ago. As a game in 2020, it still has too many outdated designs, and those Pokémon who still haven't obtained a visa to Galar may never have the opportunity to appear in the eighth generation. In conclusion, after lowering my expectations for "Tundra," the ideal and reality are only one "ancient empty acanthus" apart. If you like the main body of "Sword/Shield" but are still hesitating whether to buy the DLC, or if you are slightly disappointed with the performance of "Isle," or if you are like me and no longer have high expectations, I recommend you try "Crown Tundra." Because at least this time, this ancient empty acanthus is positive.
